Battlelines drawn for Badvel bypoll

Visakhapatnam: With the Election Commission of India releasing the schedule for the byelection to Badvel Assembly constituency in YSR Kadapa district on Tuesday, the political parties got busy drawing the battlelines for the coveted seat. The gazette notification for the bypoll will be issued on October 1 and the last date for nomination is October 8. After scrutiny of papers on Oct 11, the withdrawals close on Oct 13. The polling date is October 30, and counting of votes on November 2 when the result will be announced. The vacancy for the seat was caused due to the untimely death of YSR Congress Party MLA Dr Venkatasubbaiah who is survived by his wife Dr Sudha, a son and a daughter.

The YSRCP has more or less finalised the candidate for the bypoll and the Chief Adviser to the Government Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy gave enough indications to this. He said that Dr Sudha, the widow of Venkatasubbaiah, was likely to be chosen by the party supremo and Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy.

It was a practice to give opportunity to the bereaved family and also, there were instances when other political parties did not field their candidates to decide the contest unanimously in favour of the family, he pointed out. In the event of a contest, Sajjala said that the party would take it as seriously as it should.

The bypoll would provide an opportunity to inform the public what the government had done in the past couple of years, and also enable the latter to know the people’s opinion. Already, programmes to introduce Dr. Sudha in Badvel segment have begun and the local Member of Legislative Council Govinda Reddy is entrusted with the job.

The main rival Telugu Desam Party has also finalised its candidate. The party’s national president N. Chandrababu announced that Obulapuram Rajasekhar Reddy would contest. In the 2019 elections, Dr. Venkatasubbaiah who contested for the first time to the Assembly, defeated Rajasekhar Reddy by a handsome margin of over 44,000 votes.
