Hyderabad: A donor heart from a brain dead patient has been allotted to a needy patient at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and will be transported from Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet in a green channel for heart transplantation to NIMS between 12.30 pm and 1 pm today.
Authorities will prepare a green channel, wherein the traffic will be cleared for quick transportation of the donor heart in an ambulance from Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet to NIMS, Punjagutta.
This is for the first time that a donor heart has been allotted to a patient in NIMS from a private hospital. In the last few years, the surgeons at NIMS have conducted five successful heart transplants. However, all the five heart transplants were from the donor hearts retrieved from patients who were declared as brain dead at NIMS. A 30-year-old patient with chronic heart disease will receive the donor heart at NIMS, doctors said.
