PASSAIC, NJ- A driver was charged in the death of an 81-year-old man who was fatally struck by a vehicle as he crossed a street in Clifton over the weekend, authorities said Wednesday.
Ibrahim Jadallah, 21, of Paterson, faces one count of death by auto for recklessly causing the death of Marinus Lalumia, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced.
Jadallah was driving a Honda HR-V near the intersection of Hazel Street and Van Orden Place when the vehicle struck Lalumia around 8:20 a.m. Sunday, according to authorities. Lalumia, of Clifton, died at the scene.
“During the investigation into the crash, it was learned that Mr. Jadallah was traveling at an excessive speed at the time of the collision,” the prosecutor said in a statement.
Jadallah was also issued related traffic summonses, authorities said. It was not immediately clear if he had retained an attorney.
Lalumia was survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian, and along with three children and six grandchildren, according to his obituary. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, the Lodi-native was known in Clifton as an avid runner who co-founded the Clifton Roadrunners.
