NEW YORK, NY — The “Summer of New York City” will include a bigger-than-ever version of Macy’s iconic Fourth of July fireworks show, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The mayor announced Thursday that the annual Macy’s fireworks display — which was pared-down into a series of smaller shows last summer — will make a full return for this year’s holiday.
To mark the city’s return from the coronavirus crisis, the show will be the biggest Macy’s has ever put together, the mayor said.
“This year [it’s] back and literally better than ever,” de Blasio said. “…It’s going to take on added meaning this year as a symbol of our rebirth.”
The fireworks show will include separate dedicated areas for fully-vaccinated New Yorkers and for those who are not vaccinated to watch the display, all managed by the NYPD, the mayor said.
Viewers can also check out the show on a two-hour special on NBC, which will feature performances by Coldplay, Tori Kelly, Reba McEntire, One Republic and others.
The 2021 show’s theme will “salute the hero within” in honor of New Yorkers’ bravery and optimism during the past year, Macy’s Producer Will Coss said.
More than 65,000 shells and effects will shoot off from five barges lining the East River in Midtown.
“It is these qualities clearly evident in all New Yorkers during the most challenging time in our history that allowed our city to come back and move forward into a brighter future,” Coss said.
