According to Study 531K Remain Unemployed In New York
NEW YORK , NY — The coronavirus pandemic is still exacting a heavy toll on New York City’s workforce, according to new state unemployment numbers.
Roughly 531,000 city dwellers were unemployed in September, the state’s Department of Labor reported this week.
The city’s unemployment rate stood at 13.9 percent, the study reported. It was 3.5 percent a year ago.

The numbers show the city is still lagging behind the rest of New York in terms of jobs recovery after the coronavirus devastated the economy starting in March.
“In addition, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 12.5% to 9.7% in September 2020,” the study states.
The Bronx, where 111,000 workers were out of a job, led the boroughs in terms of unemployment. Its unemployment rate was 18.8 percent, followed by Brooklyn at 14.1 percent.
Queens’ unemployment rate was 13.8 percent while Manhattan and Staten Island were 10.9 percent and 11.6 percent, respectively.
