NDMF to honor 8 prominent Indian Americans at gala
New York: The Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation, devoted to improving and upgrading medical care and treatment of cancer related patients, will honor eight prominent Indian Americans at their 31st annual gala on September 30 at Marriott Hotel, Uniondale, NY.
The keynote speakers at the glittering event expected to be attended by 500 guests are: Priya Dutt, Indian MP and daughter of Nargis Dutt, Consul General Ambassador Prabhu Dayal and Nassau County Executive Hon. Ed Mangano.
The 2012 honorees are Gurdev Singh (Business Entrepreneur), Gurdip Singh Narula (Dedicated Service to NDMF), Haridas Kotahwala (Lifetime Achievement), Kamlesh Mehta (Lifetime Achievement), Dr. Parag H. Mehta (Excellence in Healthcare), Ravi Chopra (Business Entrepreneur), Sudhir Vaishnav (Excellence in Media), and Dr. Tanveer Mir (Excellence in Palliative Medical Care). Since it was set up in 1981 at the behest of film star Sunil Dutt after his wife Nargis Dutt died of cancer in the US, NDMF has completed 56 projects worth more than $5 million. Last year the Foundation provided Radiation Field Analyzer valued at $150,000 for cancer treatment to Indore Cancer Foundation Charitable Trust, Madhya Pradesh.
Sher Madra, currently the Chairman of NDMF, points out that the Foundation is affiliated with Indian American Cancer Society, which selects doctors from India for training in the treatment of cancer in the US. The doctors thus selected are sponsored by NDMF.
Gurdev D.P. Singh
Gurdev Singh is the President, CEO and founder of Meetu Magic Inc., an importer & wholesaler of women’s apparel. Singh also founded The African Scene, Magic, Mint Green, and U Turn Clothing.
His passion for entrepreneurship, and zest for taking new ventures is apparent in his success in the fashion business. Today his labels are sold to America’s largest department stores: T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Ross Stores, and Burlington Coat Factory and in many specialty retail stores such as Rainbow, Joyce Leslie, A& E Stores and Charlotte Rousse.
Gurdip Singh Narula
Dedicated Service to NDMF
Gurdip Singh Narula migrated to the United States in1975and ventured in realty and other businesses. Community-service is a passion for him. From 2006 to 2008 he served as a coordinator and liaison with all Sikh Temples in USA.
He is presently serving as treasurer of Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation. In 2008 he was appointed by City of New York as a member of community board # 4. He has been involved with United Sikh NGO since 2009 as a director and joined as a delegate of Sikh Summit to meet Congress members and government agencies to promote Sikh Civil & Human Rights. In September 2012, he was a delegate to Democratic party’s convention in North Carolina.
Haridas Kotahwala is a visionary and pioneer from the beginning of his career. He was amongst the first Indians in the Diamond and Colorstone Gem Industry to travel the world for business opportunities. In 1968 he opened one of the first Indian-owned Gem Stone and Diamond offices in New York. Currently, he heads Royal India USA Inc, with manufacturing units in three countries and their products being sold in over 40 countries.
In 1984, he became one of the founding members of Indian Diamond And Colorstones Association (IDCA) and is also a founding member of International Colorstone Association (ICA).
Haridas is also the Chairman of Navika Capital Group LLC, a real estate and hospitality enterprise with assets of over 600 million throughout USA. He also serves as President of Rajasthan Association of North America ( RANA), New York.
Haridas Kotahwala has generously donated to many charitable organizations in the Medical, Educational and Religious fields such as Mahaveer Cancer Hospital, Jaipur, Akshay Patra, and Viklang Sahayata Samiti at Jaipur and Udaipur.
Kamlesh C. Mehta
Kamlesh Mehta is an entrepreneur with over 27 years of experience across a wide range of industries as well as in community affairs. He is proud to be the first Asian-American appointed as Director of Business & Economic Development in Nassau County by the County Executive Ed Mangano.
In 2008, he delved into the media business by founding The South Asian Times, a weekly paper. He is the Chairman of Forsythe Media Group, LLC, the flagship company that controls IndoUS Media Inc., an integrated Media, Marketing & Advertising and Consulting Company, and IANS International, an international news wire agency.
He started his diamond trading business in Mumbai in 1985, and migrated to New York in 1986 to setup an expansive business of rare gemstones and diamonds.
He is on the board of Xavier University School of Medicine, Aruba, the Etutor.com and Member of Advisory Board of Indus American Bank, Hicksville. He is also the Charter President of Rotary Club Hicksville South and a founder of Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA), New York.
Dr. Parag H. Mehta
Excellence in Healthcare
Dr. Parag H. Mehta is currently the Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Director of Information Management, and Director of Medical Informatics at New York Methodist Hospital. He graduated from NHL Medical College, Ahmedabad. After graduating, he practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in rural and teaching hospitals. After coming to the United States, Dr. Mehta completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New York Methodist Hospital.
Ravi Chopra has been an outstanding Entrepreneur, Philanthropist & an active member of the Indo-US community in New York for the last two decades. He is known as king of calling card business in America and was one of the first to start this concept in US and Canada. He is CEO of STI group of companies and is one of the largest and oldest phone card distributors in USA with multi million dollars of annual sales.
After coming to the US in 1991, Ravi started a commercial mortgage company called STI Consultants, and in no time was closing more than billion dollar of commercial properties. Being a financier, builder, realtor and consultant, he has advised different religious organizations, businesses and individuals in their need of finances. He is a Founder Member of Celebration and is on the board of Hindu Center, Flushing.

Sudhir Vaishnav is CEO and President of GloboSat Entertainment, a premier global entertainment and broadcasting company based in New York which has become one of the strongest players in the South Asian media industry in North America. GloboSat brings popular Indian TV and radio channels such as Sahara One, Filmy, Sahara Samay, ABP Majha, ABP Ananda and Radio City to the US, UK and Canada, airing it on satellite, cable and IPTV.
Vaishnav has been actively involved with the NRI community in the US for over three decades and has served on the board of advisors with various leading community and non-profit such as Share and Care Foundation, America India Foundation, Child Rights & You (CRY), Pratham and NDMF. He has also been associated with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Gujarati Samaj of New York.
Dr. Tanveer Mir
Excellence in Palliative Medical Care
Tanveer Mir, MD, MACP, Graduated with Honors from the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. She trained at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Internal Medicine. After completing her training in Internal Medicine, she joined Nassau University Medical Center as a Chief Resident and completed ten years of service as Associate Program Director and Division Chief of Geriatric Medicine.
